Figure Study 004 - Children of the Soft Machine
oil pastel on paper
Here the model is seated. We see the left profile. The head is actually not shown, the shape that your eye believes may be the head is actually an arm. The two large shapes that are split are really the two seperate sides of the models back. The space between would be where the spine runs.
One of a series of figure studies I've begun doing this year (2006) which I am calling "Children of the Soft Machine". Yes it's far from traditional figure drawings. I sometimes find that when I'm drawing the figure and trying to get all of the little details right and the exact proportions, etc, I get frustrated. In my opinion creating Art is not about being frustrated. So I take a step back, relax, and begin again from the shoulder with soft, wide, smooth lines, and then the Children of the Soft Machine are born.
